Liverpool sign Everton’s Fara Williams and Natasha Dowie

Liverpool Ladies have signed England midfielder Fara Williams and striker Natasha Dowie from local FA WSL rivals Everton Ladies.

Williams, 28, has 107 caps and 36 goals for her country, and netted 10 times for the Blues last season.

The former Toffees captain, regarded as one of the most gifted players the England set-up has ever produced, moves after eight years at the club.

Former Charlton striker Dowie, 24, spent five years with Everton.

Dowie, niece of former West Ham and Northern Ireland striker Iain, suffered from injuries last season. But two of her four goals came in the 2010 FA Cup final victory over Arsenal.

In addition to Williams and Dowie, Liverpool have also signed United States international defender Whitney Engen  and England youth international centre-back Gemma Bonner from Chelsea.

With 10 players released at the end of the season  , more new faces are expected before the new FA WSL campaign kicks off in April 2013.

“When I was a young boy, I never dreamed I was going to make that many. It was all about pulling that red shirt on and making one appearance for the club and then the dream was made. So to clock up 600 games is a magnificent achievement for me and my family and everyone is really proud.”

Some things transcend rivalry.
At Goodison Park this evening, Everton paid respect to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster with one of classiest gestures we’ve seen. In 1989, 96 Liverpool supporters died as a result of a crush in an overcrowded section of Hillsborough stadium. Tonight Everton showed that - despite a century-long rivalry with their cross city enemies - the whole world is with Liverpool FC in remembering those who were lost. Bravo.

That’s just beautiful!
I hope our away fans can be as respectful at the weekend!

“On behalf of the Government and the country, I am profoundly sorry that this double injustice has been left for so long … Today’s report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were in no way responsible.” - David Cameron
